In 2022 while about to start a lecture in Chautauqua, New York, Rushdie was attacked by a man who rushed onto the stage and stabbed him repeatedly in the face, neck and abdomen. In February 2025 Hadi Matar was found guilty of attempted murder and assault in connection with the stabbing and in May 2025 was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
